Non-Profit Founder Honored as Huebsch Store Owner of the Quarter

Memphis laundromat much more than a place to wash and dry clothes

RIPON, Wis. – (Sept. 15, 2014) – Huebsch®, the expert in commercial laundry efficiency, has recognized Reginald Milton as the Huebsch Store Owner of the Quarter for his South Memphis Alliance (SMA) Laundromat and Resource Center (1046 South Bellevue Blvd.).

Milton, executive director of non-profit organization SMA, is the second recipient Huebsch_SMA_Laundromat-coinwashof the recently introduced award. Store Owner of the Quarter recognizes Huebsch store owners from across the country that have excelled in entrepreneurism, technology adoption, innovation and superior customer and community service, etc.

Founded in 2000 by Milton, SMA’s mission is to improve the health, knowledge and stability of young people, families and communities through social services, advocacy and mentoring. When the laundromat adjacent to the organization’s headquarters became available, the Memphis native took advantage of the opportunity to serve a community need while also generating funding for SMA.

“We noticed that many of the people who needed our support were also customers of the laundromat,” Milton noted. “Although the facility was very run-down, I could see the value in taking ownership and making it into a place where community members could do more than just laundry.”

Milton worked with authorized distributor L&M Laundry Services to replace the old equipment. Today, 20 washer-extractors with eBoost technology and four 20-pound top load washers provide SMA customers with a quality wash, while a combination of 12 30- and 45-pound stack tumble dryers and two 75-pound tumble dryers produce consistent drying results. Washer-extractors and tumble dryers equipped with intuitive Galaxy 600 controls make for easy customer—and store owner—operation.

In the space not occupied by laundry equipment, community and professional organizations provide customers with free social services—literacy training, job search support, eye exams and HIV testing—in between washing and drying.

“Reginald’s store is evidence of how a laundromat can empower a community and better the lives of its customers beyond clean clothes,” Kathryn Q. Rowen, Huebsch North American sales manager, said. “Huebsch is honored to be part of the SMA success story and we are proud to recognize Reginald as Store Owner of the Quarter.”

In just the first year of operation SMA Laundromat and Resource Center has made a bigger splash in the community than originally expected. When it opened, SMA forecasted the laundromat would generate $50,000 annually for the organization after deducting operating costs such as utilities and labor. More traffic than expected means the laundromat is on course to generate $100,000 this year.

“The staffs of L&M Laundry Services and Huebsch are so knowledgeable and I do not think the success of this project could have happened without them both,” Milton added.

Speed Queen® Announces Winner of Inaugural “My Success Story” Essay Contest
Lexington, Kentucky store owner receives $100,000 grand prize

RIPON, Wis. – (Sept. 9, 2014) – Speed Queen®, a leading provider of commercial laundry equipment, has named Joe Dan Reed, owner of Splash ‘Em Out laundromats based out of Lexington, Kentucky winner of the “My Success Story” essay contest.EssayContestWinner1_090414 Representatives from the commercial laundry manufacturer surprised Reed with the $100,000 grand prize last Thursday.

“We are proud to be part of Joe Dan’s success story and pleased to recognize his accomplishments in such a significant way,” says Matt Westphal, relationship manager, Speed Queen Financial Services (SQFS).

“When Joe Dan was new to the coin laundry industry he was determined to make his business a success. His winning essay demonstrated that with a sound business plan and some creativity, success will come—and it has, in the form of eight stores.”

Reed owns Splash ‘Em Out laundromats, located across Lexington, Nicholasville and Richmond. For his winning essay, Speed Queen has contributed $100,000 towards Reed’s recent loan for new equipment provided through SQFS.

“We are truly honored to have been chosen as the winners of this phenomenal prize. We attribute our success to always putting the customer first—whether that’s providing a relaxing and clean environment, offering daily specials, or assisting customers to their cars,” said Reed. “Splash ‘Em Out would not have grown from one to eight stores without the support of dedicated employees, a knowledgeable distributor and a manufacturer that understands our unique equipment and financial needs.”

Westphal was joined by Speed Queen national sales manager Dan Bowe, regional sales manager Tom Weisheipl, and Reed’s equipment distributor Michael Davis of Nashville-based Star Distributing, to surprise Reed and his wife,
Kelli, with the grand prize at his newest store in Lexington.

This was the first year Speed Queen has held such a contest. Between March 1 and June 15, 2014, Speed Queen store owners submitted essays of 500 words or less describing their unique and creative methods of retaining and attracting new customers. Eligible entrants were required to have financed at least $2,500 in new Speed Queen laundry equipment through SQFS during this time.

More than 50 essays were submitted from across the nation and judged based on the most compelling story relative to theme, creativity and clarity of expression. All eligible entrants received a $100 gift card to be redeemed at an authorized Speed Queen distributor.
